Eid Mubarak to all of our habibis! Soon, we will be dropping my essay on why some call me a Messianic Muslim. But more on that later (until then, listen to me and

Shadi Hamid
discuss the struggles of being a “wannabe Muslim”).

During Ramadan, I often stroll down 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn at sundown, reveling in the sound of the adhan, the site of shoes bunched together by the entrance of the masjid by Bay Ridge Ave, the truck giving out free snacks outside the Alpine Cinema, and the colorfully dressed hijabis crowding into the block’s numerous Yemeni and Palestinian restaurants for iftar.

I can’t help but feel jealous of how the demanding Ramadan fast generates such a lively and communal experience of feasting. Catholic Lent, in comparison, feels so anti-climactic.
