It is no secret that Cracks in PoMo hates suburbia.
We have spilt countless cartridges of virtual ink lambasting the horrors of this eerily artificial and diabolically atomizing form of urban planning [here, here, here, here, here, here, and here], to the point that one reader once commented on one of our numerous anti-suburbia pieces, “Hey another article about the suburbs, I wonder what he’ll say...”
Surely, there are plenty of healthy, vibrant suburban communities. Our agenda has more to do with critiquing what suburbia represents on a symbolic, ontological level—which certainly does have practical implications. Just look at the content put out by outlets like Not Just Bikes, Climate Town, and Strong Towns.
But we thought we’d take a moment to step out of character and play devil’s advocate. Perhaps our demonization of suburbia is unmerited. Perhaps the suburbs do not actually incur the wrath of Allah.
