We are very excited to announce that the Cracks in Postmodernity Substack will be expanding its platform to include contributions from more writers. After the success of the zine, it became clear that not only was there a demand for more content, but also that this platform has taken on a newfound depth from becoming a collaborative effort.
As I said at the zine launch party at the Catholic Worker (reviewed here by Jonathan Mittiga), our goal at Cracks in PoMo is not only to stimulate intellectual thought, but also to foster community and meaningful dialogue amongst people who—despite not always arriving at the same conclusions—take questioning and critical inquiry about our current cultural moment seriously. Following the example of Dorothy Day, one of our patronesses, our hope in expanding the platform will be not only to bring about “clarification of thought,” but also love of neighbor and a true sense of community.
I was moved by seeing the wide array of people present at the launch party: people spanning generational, ethnic, religious, political, ideological, and even geographic divides. We had Catholic NYC trads and Dimes “BPD art heauxs,” boomers and zoomers, DSA members and integralists, married couples and Grindr addicts, AngloCaths and Muslims, OG Catholic Workers and even people who travelled all the way from irrelevant parts of the country (DC, Boston) just for the party. A true horseshoe moment. I was perhaps most profoundly surprised—and consoled—by finding out that a group of attendees snuck into the chapel to ask Dorothy Day to pray for the unity of the political left and right and the healing of the Church’s wounds.
I am looking forward to bringing together writers with a variety of perspectives—including ones that I may not completely agree with, but who will write with a level of attention and nuance that will provoke insightful questioning and food for thought in their readers. Our content will tread the thin line between edgy and hopeful, snarky and sincere, provocative and profound…without falling into the traps of extreme nihilism nor cringey sentimentalism. Look out for articles from Carlo Lancelotti,
(simoneweilfooddiaries), , , Hamilton Craig, Leticia Ochoa Adams, John Milbank, and many more. While we hope to produce another physical zine at some point in the near future, we will be using this digital platform to continue the collaborative effort that the first zine volume has started.
In order to fund these efforts, we will start paywall-ing our content, which will work as follows:
-Free subscribers will get access to a limited number of posts
-Paid monthly subscribers will get access to all posts ($5 x month)
-Paid annual subscribers will get access to all posts ($60 x year)
-Founding members will get access to all posts and will receive a Cracks in PoMo merch package ($100 x year)
-Feel free to reach out about making a contribution larger than $100 per year…we can surely use it!
Current free subscribers can easily upgrade to a paid subscription.
And you can get a free 7-day trial of access to all posts.
We are also looking to sell ad space! So if you know any companies who might be interested, please let us know.
In the spirit of building community, we look forward to hosting more in person events. Our next will be at Sovereign House on October 12. Look out for more info.
