By praising Emilia Perez and its star Karla Sofía Gascón, many within the Hollywood establishment thought they were demonstrating their progressive bona fides. “What a brave story featuring such a courageous actress! Yay trans! Much progress. Very forward-thinking. Wow.”

But when Gascón’s heinously politically incorrect tweets from several years ago resurfaced, she turned from trans it-girl to persona non grata. Her supporters felt betrayed: “How could someone who is a symbol of progress say such backwards things!?”

Contrary to what most straight cisgender allies think, most queers (gays and trans) are not exactly paragons of morality. In fact, pre-Stonewall queers prided themselves on their fearless transgression against social taboos and bourgeois moral norms.

Most allies are in for a rude awakening, once the veneer of being an oppressed victim wears off and the queer unveils his/her/their true colors (which surprisingly enough are not rainbow-hued).
