Steven Arena joins the pod to discuss seed oils, diets inspired by the Platonic forms, life in the Mediterranean, and more. It was cool to see how his hot takes on dieting and exercise (the typical discourse around which is so often cloying and insipid) converged with points I’ve made about metaphysics, ethnicity, and cultural aesthetics.
He had a lot to say about how America’s frenetic back and forth between puritanism and libertinism shapes the way we talk about food and diet, and how we are quick to discount bigger picture ontological and aesthetic questions when discerning how to eat. Steven and I were also able to bond over the allure of life on the Greek islands (where he traveled this past summer), and the things he noticed about the relationship between food, spirituality, and lifestyle there.

This is our first pod on the topic of food culture…something I’ve been wanting to cover for a while now. To celebrate, Steven’s brand Ancient Crunch and their seed oil free line of tortilla chips, MASA are offering our listeners 10% off their order with the promo code CRACKSINPOSTMODERNITY www.masachips.com/cracksinpostmodernity
Seriously, you should buy some…they’re delicious and go great with guac, salad, and wine. And they literally disappeared as soon as we put them on the table at the zine launch party.
