As the Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor wrote in his tome A Secular Age, we are presently faced with “a widespread sense of loss…if not always of God, then at least of meaning.” While science, technology, and medicine continue advancing, we seem to have collectively lost a sense of the greater mystery of the cosmos and of our own human nature.
Some posit that this calls for us to recover religious practices, morals, and values from yesteryear. Others say we have no choice but to give in and accept the fate of our hopeless universe. Still, others look to the transformative power of beauty and art as a light in our tunnel of disenchantment.
Novels, in particular, claims Joseph Epstein, “are always informing us that life is more various, richer, more surprising, more bizarre than we had thought.”
The Cracks in Postmodernity will be hosting “Holy Lit!”: a discussion on the novel as an antidote to our disenchanted age, featuring Tara Isabella Burton, Jordan Castro, and Matthew P. Binder.
