I’m sure many of you are already aware of @ineedgodineverymomentofmylife, the infamous religious meme account on Instagram. The admins’ religious convictions might throw you—their memes feature content related to Catholicism, Evangelical Protestantism, Islam, and New Age spirituality, and their tone ranges from the doctrinally orthodox to the heterodox and at times bordering on the blasphemous. But to attempt to pin down their beliefs is to misunderstand the page’s “mission,” if you well.
The memes aim to create a playfully provocative space that introduces religiosity and theism—broadly speaking—into internet discourse. If they can be said to have any “agenda,” it is to challenge the predominant mode of positivist secularism, and to give credibility to a theistic imagination. For more on their influence on the meme-osphere, check out this feature in Vox.
After a botched attempt to interviewed Kyle, one of the admins, on Cracks in PoMo (recording an interview at Caffe Reggio over the din of the after-work Friday crowd, on top of the waitress dropping silverware and plates right next to us), Kyle invited me to the i need god pod to discuss my conversion, my double baptism, my article on the MTV VMAs and the cult of celebrity, and the religious implications of Lady Gaga and Bad Bunny’s artistry. Check out the abridged version of our interview on Spotify and Apple, and sign up for the i need god Patreon to hear the full version.
